Kits for the 2nd Annual Halstead Design Challenge in cooperation with the Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) went on sale yesterday morning at 9am. Within 4 hours the SNAG website had crashed multiple times due to traffic overload and all 200 kits were sold out. The challenge is a fundraiser for SNAG, with the cost of the kits benefiting the organization.
This year the challenge theme is Memento. Each finished brooch must incorporate a photograph, use 50% of the kit materials, and meet other specifications. A juried selection of submissions will be exhibited at Rhino Contemporary Crafts Co. Gallery in New Orleans in May during the annual SNAG Conference. Last year’s competition was also a huge success, with 100 kits selling out in less than 24 hours. 35 submissions were juried for the gallery show at Blue Spiral in Asheville, North Carolina. It was a wonderful opportunity for up-and-coming artists to be displayed right alongside more well-known experts in the field.

SNAG is an international organization supporting professional jewelers and academics. Their mission includes fostering community, creating opportunities for professional development and advocacy for the field. SNAG events have an amazing sense of camaraderie and inspiration.
