As the busy holiday season approaches, the Halstead team is thinking about ways to make the whole experience less stressful, more productive and more successful. One of the biggest issues that comes up at this time of year is out of stock items.
Halstead President Hilary Halstead Scott says, “We hate out of stocks as much as customers do. It’s one of the biggest frustrations for our customers and for us. It’s something we’re always trying to prevent but there are a lot of variables at play. We’re always trying to adapt.”
It’s well-known that anticipating customer behavior is the holy grail when it comes to reselling. The Halstead team watches customer history and makes trend forecasts, but it’s nearly impossible to predict when Angelina Jolie is going to appear on the cover of a magazine wearing an infinity symbol or another component that’s then catapulted into bestseller status.
Plus, the fourth quarter is when some jewelery makers stock up on supplies for the entire next year. That means sudden, unpredictable orders that may completely wipe out inventory of certain items.
When the item you need is out of stock, the best thing you can do is call and talk to a Customer Service Representative (CSR). Halstead Customer Service Manager Barbara Siegel, says, “We can suggest possible subs or let you know when that item will be available. If it isn’t possible for you to call us, I do recommend that you leave out of stock items on your order, as our cart and inventory systems do not run in real time. Sometimes, an item that shows ‘out’ could actually be available and we will be able to ship it to you. Your credit card is not charged until your order is ready to go out the door.”
The Halstead team tries to avoid out of stocks by offering a selection around popular items, such as other sizes or variations on the same theme. A lot of times, your CSR can help you find similar items easier and faster than you can by searching around the website.
Halstead tries to be transparent about restocking by letting the customer know when replenishment is expected. Some items are replaced in less than a week and others take several months to produce. Production times and capacity are important factors in delays. If the product you need is placed on backorder, we will waive the USPS shipping charges when orders exceed $30 per item but are under $100 overall.
