The entire Halstead clan went on their yearly vacation last week leaving us semi-bored with nothing better to do than plot an afternoon escapade into the studio for some major play time!
Jayme, Mercedes and I hit the studio at 1pm Friday afternoon sharp, with Hilary’s permission of course! We started out with some much anticipated enameling practice. This was the first time enameling for Mercedes, who had prepared herself with a few how-to videos. After catching on to the enameling procedure she was soon sharing with us her multi-layer technique. With the addition of the superior butane and the new layered approach, our pieces were coming out with beautiful colors on them!
Jayme and I decided to try out the studio’s new kiln. We heated it for about an hour and then Jayme put in an enameled piece which came out with some neat cracks running through out it. I then added a couple pieces myself and loved the smooth, brite end result!
Next we moved onto wire-working. Jayme, who had watched some wire-working videos, was anxious to show us what she had learned. After having us practice coiling with copper wire, she had us move on to soft gauge silver wire and Swarovski and pewter beads. We did a little wire-working before 5:00 rolled around and we were forced to quit.
As far as projects, I still need to finish wire-wrapping my book ends and finishing a cuff bracelet that I had planned. Even though nothing was completed I walked away a huge fan of our studio kiln. I can’t wait for Hilary to return and show us even more advanced enameling techniques!
