It is Tucson Gem Show time once again. We just got back from walking the shows to see the latest trends in jewelry. We were lucky to have amazing 75 degree weather. The last two years were freezing cold so it was nice to bask in the sunshine. Here is what we found.
- Leather – This was the hottest identifiable trend at the show. All types of leather are being used for stringing and riveting. Different thicknesses, colors and textures are adding rich depth to jewelry design. Surprising pairings abound such as Tahitian pearls and high end gems mixed with leather cords.
- Lapis & Turquoise – Opaque stones continue to be trendy with blue and green varieties leading the pack. Turquoise and lapis are particularly prominent but other opaques such as larimar and sodalite are also widespread.
- Novelty – Quirky focal items keep getting lots of attention at recent shows. The standouts for me this year were meteorite material and more found object pieces for mixed media design. My favorite was the repurposed liquor bottle booth from BottleHood that featured beautiful bangles and focal rings made from bestselling brands like Skyy Vodka, Grey Goose, Jagermeister and various wines.
- Layers – No doubt that stacking and layering are still going strong. Pile on the necklaces, bracelets and rings. Excess is back.
