Last week our 2010 winner of The Halstead Grant rolled into Prescott for a visit. Amy Fortunato and her husband, Kort McCumber, were in the midst of a road trip that included stops at the Tucson Gem Show and several music venues for Kort. He just happens to be a very talented musician…but we’ll get to that later.
It was a pleasure to finally meet Amy in person after lots of fun banter via phone calls and email. Since winning The Halstead Grant last summer she has upgraded her website, opened an Etsy boutique and expanded her business. Cowboy’s Sweetheart continues to make Western jewelry that bridges the gap between Southwestern style and on-trend fashion. Using traditional metalworking techniques she crafts beautiful cowgirl jewelry that even us non-cowgirls want to wear. I have a pair of the Renegade Rose earrings that I wear at least once a week. People love them.
Amy and Kort joined us for a judging committee dinner in downtown Prescott the night they arrived. We narrowly missed being splattered with cajun shrimp sauce when our waitress tripped right by the table. Whew, close call! Then we all enjoyed a fantastic meal while we learned about Kort and Amy’s creative endeavors and travels around the world.
The next day the lovely couple came to the Halstead Bead warehouse of jewelry supplies to take a tour, meet the staff and enjoy lunch with everyone at the office. That evening we all met up again for a real treat; Kort was playing live at The Raven in downtown Prescott, a local watering hole with the world’s best sweet potato fries.
Kort is an accomplished musician specializing in Americana music, a blend between folk and bluegrass styles. He dazzled the crowd with his amazing vocals while simultaneously strumming the guitar AND playing the harmonica. I can barely talk on my cell phone while walking so I was really impressed. I’ve been listening to his CD in my car for the last few weeks and I can’t get enough of it. You can hear his music and see a music video on the Kort McCumber website.
Sadly, Kort and Amy rolled out of town that very same night to head to their next musical engagement in Taos, NM. We’ll look forward to seeing them again on their next Arizona tour.
